safety on the water

Safety Always Comes First!

In General

Because IYSO is the largest school sailing program in North America, we've taught on average, approximately 1000 to 1500 beginner sailors every year for the last 14 years, and we have done it without incident. We maintain our zero-incident safety record by constantly evaluating and updating our gear, safety protocol and practices.

You will be safe with us because:

  • Our staff is seasoned and knowledgeable not only about sailing but about teaching, as well. Not only will we keep you safe, we’ll make sure you learn how to keep yourself safe.
  • Every adult and child in the water must wear a life jacket (we provide these). No one is allowed in the water for any reason without one.
  • Our instruction features Hobie Wave catamarans, which are steady and forgiving, but also responsive and fun!  We also provide other sail options, depending on skill level, weather conditions and location.
  • You'll begin by learning sailing basics in shallow and/or calm water. You'll sail between 2 "marks," and our staff will coach you through sailing and returning. Staff and volunteers are generally on the boat or in the water, only an arm’s reach away, and the safety boat will always be nearby. Only when you are ready to go a bit deeper will you be allowed to do so, and then it’s by playing follow-the-leader with the instructors and safety boat.
  • Our safety boat(s)/jet skis with skilled drivers operate throughout the entire session, keeping an eye on all participants, at all times.

Bad Weather

In the event of stormy weather, IYSO will make the decision to curtail or cancel the sailing session; however, we make every effort NOT to do that.

We will update you via text regarding weather/cancellation, if weather is a concern prior to session.  If weather kicks up during session, we immediately bring everyone to shore, towing if necessary.

Please dress according to weather conditions! If it is cold and damp, you may want to bring along a winter jacket, blanket or sleeping bag to wrap up in.

International Youth Sailing of Oshkosh (IYSO) offers fun, safe, beginning sailing lessons!

Life jackets are an important part of safety!  Ask us about IYSO's impeccable 12-year safety record!

Waivers

Each participant will need a waiver in order to participate in each sailing session.

You will want to select the appropriate waiver, download, print, fill out, and bring to the sailing session.

Once at the session, depending on Covid-19 regulations, we may ask you to sign yet another regarding social distancing... but we will see!
